As part of the project to improve and restore Scarborough’s South Cliff Gardens, the Friends of South Cliff Gardens community group is inviting members of the public to support the project by sharing memories of the gardens or by submitting old photos, postcards, general pictures, stories and comments to help them build an archive of information.

A series of heritage gathering events where people can share their memories and historic material will be held at Scarborough Library on 2, 9 and 16 December between 10.00am and 1.00pm. All are welcome to add to the work already started by the friends group on unlocking the hidden secrets of the gardens.

The 9th of July 2017 Garden Party was a wonderful day for Shuttleworth Garden. It was the
100th anniversary of the gift of the gardens to the town by their creator Alfred Shuttleworth in 1917, and the 80th of the creation of the Miniature, or Fairy, Garden by the Scarborough Corporation in 1937/8. We celebrated that by a garden party where people enjoyed scones, cakes and delicious sweet things (Fairy cakes included!)
We were regally entertained by “Merry Melancoly” consisting of Simon Nisbett, lutenist and Jenny Hill, singer. The weather was ideal and Shuttleworth Gardens looked at their best.

People attending were delighted to see the gardens looking so attractive and kindly donated £53.48 to our funds. Many thanks.
